Bug Description
I've been chasing this bug for over a year. The problem is often described on the internet as a "jumpy cursor".
I have a Dell Precision M6800, with an alps glidepoint touchpad, but I see it reported on other machines. After seeing a comment on the web, I verified that it does not occur with opensuse 13.2 kde. I use linux mint kde 17.1 and had the same problem with previous versions of kubuntu.
The problem is that the cursor has a high probability of a wild jump whenever it encounters a new display object. The problem disappears if I use the psmouse driver, but then I can't suppress tapping. While this undoubtedly means there is a problem with the synaptics driver, the graphics system should never allow mouse movement to cause a random jump whenever a new object is encoountered. I saw similar behavior with vmware workstation when gtk upgraded. I have no clue what package is at fault but surely not just the synaptics driver.
A less frequent feature of the bug is a complete freeze rather than a jump, requiring a roundtrip through a virtual console to free up the graphics. Surely some call has a bad pointer.
