Bug Description

Libvirt now has native support for pluging vNICs into the midonet overlay.

The change in libvirt would make Ubuntu Openstack with MidoNet use a supported interface mode of libvirt instead of a domain tainting mode; this would allow for a cleaner back-end plumbing as today a separate tool is used.

Proposing that these upstream patches go into Vivid release.

Just to be clear there are no kernel patches needed for this right? The 'linux' task should be removed?

The libvirt patches apply to 1.2.12 quite cleanly, I see no problems with cherrypicking them into vivid.

@Mark,

could you please update the description to add

A rationale for the exception, explaining the benefit of the change

(Per the FFE process outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess. I will add a detailed description of the patchset).

@Mark,

looking at the patches, the require mm-ctl to be installed on the build machine. When I type 'mm-ctl' on the command line on my viivd laptop, command-not-found does not know of any package which would supply it.

So adding these patches to libvirt, right now, would not give you the functionality. Installing whatever package provides mmctl on your target machine would *not* suffice, because the path to it needs to have been detected by AC_PATH_PROG at build time.

Where does mm-clt come from?

@Serge,

/usr/bin/mm-ctl is provided by the midolman package. It is available in our repositories.
http://repo.midonet.org/midonet/v2015.01/stable/

Would it be possible to have it installed in the libvirt package building machines? Or the only solution is to split out mm-ctl into a separate package that is made part of the ubuntu repositories?

@celebdor,

I'm sorry, that's not feasible. Anything required during package install must be not only in the archive, but in main.

Failing that, your best bet is to pursue building in a ppa, or something like the cloud archive.

Marking wontfix for now - we should if possible pursue putting the required package into the archive and into main and then re-mark this confirmed.
