To clarify, it only happens on one user account - the first one created for this system some time back. Other accounts are not affected it seems.

(Bug 1328858 shows "Fix Released" because it's fixed in Ubuntu 14.10. Not 14.04 yet.)

Oh, I should mention that I enabled the hardware-enablement stack to get a DualShock controller (gamepad) working recently. And there were some updates around that time. Since then I have experienced this issue.

So this might not be a dupe in the strictist sense? Thanks for your time Daniel van Vugt.
