first- and last- doesn't work in zsqlmethod pluggable brain

when using a zsqlmethod, I can use the variables first-[field] and last-[field] to verify if its the first or last occurrence of a return field in a query. Unfortunatelly it doesn't work when used with a pluggable brain method.
