Bug Description

If using the touchpad, the cursor jumps around on the screen. It seems to me that there are also some events (like clicks) that get fired.

This issue can be worked around by disabling and enabling the touchpad (pressing Fn+F7 twice) but it will reappear after a certain amount of time.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.0 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I had this issue since I installed my system, so there was no prior kernel version which I did not have the issue with.

I'm running the 4.0-rc3 kernel now but how/when can I say that the issue is gone? Maybe it will come back after one day, after one week or after one month?

The bug still exists in the 4.0-rc3 kernel.

DrTobbe, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-input) by following the instructions verbatim at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked via http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html . It can take a day for the new e-mail to show up in the respective archive.

Thank you for your understanding.

It seems it's not really resolved, if it is a hardware or software issue.
The problem still exists!
Also there is still warranty on my acer. So I don't like to tinker with it, as long as I don't know what the problem is... ;-)

Acer has confirmed me that they have hardware issues with Acer V3-371 's touchpad mouse.

I contacted Acer's support here in Finland and immediately after describing the problem on the phone I received a RMA number to send the device for repairs. Acer repaired the device and returned it to me. The repair note said that grounding of the touchpad mouse had been fixed.

Unfortunately the problem came back in about two weeks. Acer took the laptop back for repairs again. This time they changed entire touchpad to another one from another device manufacturer. The device is now working normally. Let's hope it keeps that way.

Best Regards, Jukka

Thank you, Jukka, for your information!

After I read your comment, I contacted the Acer-Support and described the problem. Also I told them the procedure to solve the problem, how you explained. The support asked me to send them my computer for repairs.
Today I got the computer back with the note, that they changed the touchpad from another manufacturer and upgraded the BIOS.

If the problem will come back, I will write a comment in this bug-report again. But untill now it works fine, and I hope too, that it will keep going on this way!

Best Regards,
Chris

Hey guys,

just for your information: I sent my laptop back to Acer twice, after the second time the issue never appeared again, so it is a hardware issue at 99.9 %.

How can we close this issue because it is not a bug in Ubuntu?

Best regards
