Background information: the main problem is the nvidia driver. I have also freezes at boot with the last line stating ACPI: Video Device .... Unfortunately with this hardware I cannot use builtin Intel GPU because it does not drive any of external video ports.
I have two 3K monitors connected over docking stations DPorts , lid is closed.

I tried all 3 version of nvidia binary driver available through packet manager, none works properly in context of suspend/hibernation.
Suspend/Hibernation never worked reliably. I have managed a few times to wake the system from hibernation, but it was very rare.

As this issue being fixed is very important to me, let me know how can I help further. I would be glad to test any hint or workaround you provide.

Paul Ortyl, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-w-series-laptops/thinkpad-w530 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2.61). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

The BIOS update was a very bad decision.
The kernel booted only up to ACPI backlight setting and hanged.
This has happened sporadically in the past, but now it hanged EVERY time.

I am in the process of fresh reinstall of the system. I'll get back as soon as I have anything to report.
