Bug Description
The Development Environment on Ubuntu [1] uses directories in `/var` for checking out the repo, keeping logs and maintaining some state in lib. As `/var` is typically not writable by a user, it would be helpful to describe the process from the standpoint of a user logged into the machine normally.
