Bug Description

I upgraded to Plasma 5 using both the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next and the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next and a second time using ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next-backports.

After login everthing looks and works great. However about 3 minutes after either using or not using the system, it freezes. I can move the mouse, but can't click anything, nor use any keyboard shortcuts like Alt+F2. I've checked /var/log/syslog and xorg logs which don't show anything.

The Bug is similar to the following bug, however, Alt+Tab or any other key combination does not unfreeze the desktop:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/1384512

My system is:

Clevo Laptop
Intel i7 4th Gen Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4800MQ CPU @ 2.70GHz
Nvidia Graphics (with Optimus) GeForce GTX 850
Kubuntu 14.10

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Included advice on what log files to check.

I am not an ubuntu user. I have an archlinux instalation with plasma 5 too. It have been working fine for a month. But yesterday, my desktop behaviour is exactly like yours.

In my case, I thought that this was due to an xorg-server package update (now I have xorg-server 1.7.1 installed in my arch distro) because at minute 3 from boot, the following message was shown at the end of the Xorg.0.log file:

"(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch"

But, the matter is not clear for me at all.

After plasma 5 freezes, I can open a console terminal with ctrl+alt+Fn, and works fine.

@kikoloche - thanks for your reply. After opening Konsole, does the session unfreeze? Are you able to Alt-Tab and click the taskbar etc...??

Not konsole, but a terminal out of the graphical enviroment (crtl+alt+Fn). When I return to Plasma 5 it remains frozen. I have collectehad some traces from kwin after It gets frozen. I have attached them in a file named traces.zip

In my case the problem was a corruption state of svg cache. I resolved the problem with the following commands:

rm -fr ~/.cache/plasma*
rm -fr ~/.cache/ksycoca*
rm -fr ~/.cache/*.kcache
kbuildsycoca5

I hope this help

Ah. That explains it. I had recently filled up my hard disk too after setting up kmail with my gmail account. That must have caused the corrupt cache.

Thanks again.

Changed in kubuntu-ppa:

I had the same issue and my frozen KDE workspace immediately unfroze after executing
rm -fr ~/.cache/plasma* in Konsole

Same issue, my hard drive got full, then the cache corrupted.

As suggested above, solved by executing: rm -fr ~/.cache/plasma*
