Bug Description

Since there is no longer a kmail menu icon, you can't start it from the menu if
you deinstall kontact.

Does this bug still exist in Breezy?

It does still exist, hard to know how to fix it. We don't want the KMail icon if Kontact is
installed but there's no way to specify if it should be shown otherwise.

Personally, I would prefer to use only kmail, even if Kontact is installed. Kontact insists on starting this reminder daemon (even when configured not to, quite annoying), and I don't use anything in Kontact besides the mail component. Basically, it's very annoying to have to run kmail from the Alt-F2 box (or remove the NoDisplay=true from /usr/share/applications/kde/KMail.desktop), even when kmail is configured to by my default mail client.

Doesn't seem to be a problem in Intrepid.
