Bug Description

CID: 201212-12386 HP Pavilion 23 AIO

This AIO has two AMD graphic controller:
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7540D] [1002:9991]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mars [Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8750M] [1002:6600]

On 14.04.1, it could boot to desktop normally with the open-source driver, but not with fglrx / fglrx-updates.
It will stuck on the purple screen with "Ubuntu" and running dots, but at this moment, you could switch to console without any problem.

Error message could be found in the Xorg log:
[ 17.652] (EE) AIGLX error: failed to open /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so, error[/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

Can you try a new amd driver from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Ubuntu+x86+64?

We are also backporting the driver to 14.04 in bug 1308954.

Hello Anthony, with the driver downloaded from ADM (version 2:14.051), it still failed to load X on this system.
The same .so file not found error message could be found in the Xorg log.

ii fglrx 2:14.501-0ubuntu1 amd64 Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-amdcccle 2:14.501-0ubuntu1 amd64 Catalyst Control Center for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-core 2:14.501-0ubuntu1 amd64 Minimal video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-dev 2:14.501-0ubuntu1 amd64 Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators (devel files)

More debugging information:
Base on the error message, I tried to install linux-generic-headers and reinstall the driver, then link the shared object file with:
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib /usr/lib64
sudo mkdir -p /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so

It looks like this has resolved the .so file not found issue, but from the log it complains about there is no /dev/dri/card0.
(The actual location is /dev/ati/card0)

The errors in the logs should be marked as warnings, as the fglrx keeps looking for the same library in different places. The log in comment #6 shows that the library was found in the end:

[ 19.166] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized OpenGL driver(II) GLX: Initialized DRI GL provider for screen 0

Something seems to be wrong in the kernel module though:

[ 17.369165] <6>[fglrx] ATIF platform detected with notification ID: 0x81
[ 17.535110] <3>[fglrx:cf_object_handle_cmd] *ERROR* Can not generate cf candidates

We should ask AMD what the binary is doing.

you might want to try again with the latest ubuntu-drivers-common, which now comes with better support for dual AMD powerxpress
