Notification remains permanently

The new message icon appears in the system tray applet when I get a new mail, but then it remains permanently until I manually clear it. Reading the message, deleting it, moving it, replying to it, nothing I do will clear it automatically.

Other notifications remain too: this may be a limitation in indicator-applet rather than Thunderbird (or other applications). I really don't know....

Hello Ken,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with the indicator-applet package or Thunderbird. You made this bug report in 2015 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 1416150
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Well I'm on Ubuntu MATE Xenial now and the indicator applet is quite different. No notification is shown at all despite the option being enabled in Thunderbird. Either this is intentional or a new bug so I'll leave this to expire until I know better.
