Bug Description

The system crashes with a blank screen many times, 8 or 10 times this AM. Chrome crashes, Firefox crashes, PCManFM, copying and pasting, scrolling, and many other apps. It crashed this AM during an Update system and nothing else was running. I think I was scrolling the details. I can not give any dumps because it won't run long enough. I listed some info in terminal and it crashed scrolling it. Maybe it is hardware, but it seems to be running now for at least 30 mins. I think I am going to change distros. I tried many things including running some live CDs and DVDs with differing versions of Ubuntu on them to see if I could determine a place when they stopped running, and thought I figured it out, but I did not have it figured out. It has been crashing since I installed 14.04, I think. I may have some non-standard repositories. I ran 12.04 for about a year or 2.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The kernel boots. It seems noticeably faster. It will take a little time to test. I have not resumed usual activities yet. I was coming to the conclusion that it was the video. I had a lot of trouble with an AMD and an Nvidia Geforce card on an old system. I think I had 5 Ubuntu drivers for it. Or I thought it could be the code that syncs input and output.

Firefox crashed with a white screen. I had to reboot. I usually listen and read news in the AM and copy and paste links and summaries to the news into OpenOffice documents, but I have not been doing this lately. I blog some and first write my words into OpenOffice documents then copy and paste them into the blog. I had Chrome and Firefox both open.

realtimexxx, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/optiplex-745/drivers an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2.6.6). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

I finally figured out the problem. The problem existed in almost every live version that I have successfully run in the past including Knoppix. I do not know how the BIOS got changed because I did not fool with it as I did not know it. The video BIOS was set to NOT use the integrated video card. I set it to use the integrated video card. An additional benefit is that it runs faster. I did not change the bios because old versions of Knoppix would not run.
