Simplify 'File' menu structure (remove submenu 'New')

With the new template dialog merged last year, the sub-menu 'New' is now rather short, and its two items are quite easy to miss when browsing the menus with the mouse. The attached diff moves the two entries out of the sub-menu to the top of the main 'File' menu. The labels of the menu items are adjusted to 'New' and 'New from Template...'.

Agreed. The two entries menu is not very convenient.

Patch tested on Crunchbang Waldorf, 0.91.x rev. 13720.

Attached is a modified version that keeps the accelerator for the "New" entry.

The patch could be applied to the 0.91.x branch, but it would require that we keep the old "_Templates..." name instead of "_New from Template..." so that we don't break the translations.

AFAICT the patch 'patch-simplify-file-menu-v2.diff ' adds the same accelerator (N) for both menu entries - this requires to type the accel twice in order to access 'New from Template'. The accel key 'T' OTOH is unused so far on the 'File' menu. Just curious - why would you prefer to reuse the same key for both entries, instead of using 'N' for 'New' and 'T' for 'New from Template'?

Nevermind, I got it.

{Though for trunk, I'd probably prefer using "_New" and "New from _Template..." instead of "_New" and "_New from Template...".)

I read the patch (v1) too fast and didn't noticed it. Of course, it's a good idea to use different accelerators, and 'T' looks good for the New from Templates entry.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to the accelerators in the first patch either, thanks for noticing!

Patch v3 committed to trunk in r13874 - let's see what users think about the change …
