Bug Description

In nautilus, when I go to Edit -> Preferences -> Display -> icon captions, and change the highest order (first one) from None to Type (or anything else), this change is not applied to desktop icons and nothing happens to them. And when I set it back to None, Type captions (or whatever I selected at first) appear under desktop icons.
This problem only occurs for desktop icons. It works fine for icons in other directories.

Actually I expect that when I change icon captions from None to Type, type information of each file or directory appears under desktop icons, but nothing happens. And furthermore I expect that when I change it back to None, type information disappears, but they appear.

This is a quite old bug. I tried with nautilus 1:3.18.4.is.4.14.3-0ubuntu5 on Ubuntu 16.04.

I can confirm that the special folders like "Home", "Network" and "Trash" do not show icon caption, but I do not know if this is intended or not, since the caption does not appear even when "icon caption" option is set back to None.
Finally, all the other files or folders created on the Desktop, show correctly the expected caption.

If the last behavior is not intended for the special icons, I think this bug can be closed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sebastien,

the original issue was reported against "nautilus 3.10" which can't be selected on the upstream bug tracker (only >=3.14), and in the newer version 3.18 I cannot reproduce it.

What do you suggest to do?

I would suggest having this bug filed marked against the Xenial series as 'Confirmed' since if it's been changed then the Xenial behavior likely wasn't intended and then mark the bug in general as Fix Released? Could Sebastien mark this as affecting Xenial because he is a Bug Control member?

Changed in nautilus (Ubuntu):
