It is possible this is a symptom of Bug #140540, please check it and report back.

My problem differs from #140540, because in all system fonts are quite good. I solved my problem. I just changed DPI in my Firefox and Thunderbird like this:
1. Оpen Edit/Settings/Settings/Advanced/Settings Editor in Thunderbird or write in address line about:config in Firefox.
2. Find layout.css.dpi
3. Set layout.css.dpi to 72
In my case for some strange reason there was -1.
PROBLEM SOLVED

I'm marking this Invalid although I'd prefer a 'Resolved' status for this situation.

I'm a bit of a newbie to the whole bug reporting and resolution thing here, so please bear with me.

I was going to submit the same bug report today, as I ran into the same issue.

uname -a: Linux art-ubuntu-laptop 2.6.22-11-generic #1 SMP Mon Sep 17 03:45:58 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
Otherwise the same package/distro info as Ivan.

Ivan's solution worked, but is this not indicative of some type of installation issue? I realize it's a bit trivial, but just wondered if this should be valid after all.

Arthur, was your issue caused by upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy the same as Ivan's?

If you can confirm this, I'll re-open the bug mark it Confirmed and assign it to the team.

MIne was a fresh installation of Gutsy from scratch.

Okay, thanks Arthur.

I'm currently wrestling with Gutsy installer problems on three separate notebooks. When I finally get them installed I'll check what the Firefox setting is on those before and after starting Firefox for the first time, and if there's a reproducable problem I'll mark this comfirmed.

Hi,

I upgraded yesterday to Gutsy to Feisty and had this very problem. Everything was OK as long as I used 96DPI in Gnome. However changing it to 80DPI (my preferred setting) made Firefox fonts nearly illegible (smaller than every other app). Changing layout.css.dpi from -1 to 80 as per Ivan Ivanoff's instructions helped.

I'm left wondering if every user must now adjust this setting manually. Madness...

Attached is a pic with 80DPI Gnome & no setting changed in Firefox.
