Bug Description
I did a system update & upgrade on Freya and after that Pantheon Files stopped working. It won't open when I click on the icon, and when I'm trying to run it from terminal, i get this error message:
pantheon-files: symbol lookup error: pantheon-files: undefined symbol: gof_directory_
Some extra information (if you need):
Kernel: 3.13.0-44-generic
Freya 64 bit
CPU: Intel N2840 @ 2.16GHz
Graphics: Intel Corporation ValleyView Gen7 (rev 0e)

Had the same issue. files-core0` (I suppose it was this specific package) to be kept back when using `apt-get`.
The cause appears to have been a package conflict causing multiple package upgrades, including `libpantheon-
Upgrading through `sudo aptitude upgrade` did the following:
Resolving dependencies... scripttools{ a} libqt4-test{a} libqtassistantc lient4{ a} python3-keyring{a} python3-pyqt4{a} python3- secretstorage{ a} python3-sip{a} notify{ u} python-keyring{u} python- secretstorage{ u} files-core0 midori-granite pantheon pantheon-photos photos- common
The following NEW packages will be installed:

The following packages will be REMOVED:

The following packages will be upgraded:

After the upgrade, pantheon-files worked again.
