Bug Description

The buttons on my laptop touchpad are not functioning correctly under Ubuntu 14.10.

The laptop is a HP Stream model 11-d008tu. The trackpad is all one section and does not have separate visible mouse buttons. When running Windows 8 clicking the bottom left section of the trackpad causes a left click action, and clicking the bottom right section of the trackpad causes a right click action.

Under Ubuntu the behaviour is as follows:

- An optical USB mouse plugged into the laptop works normally IF the trackpad mouse buttons are never used.
- Clicking the left or right button sections of the trackpad does NOT result in any left or right click action occurring (e.g. opening right click menu).
- After trying to perform a left or right button click using the button section of the trackpad, any left or right click from the USB mouse does NOT work anymore if clicking on an application window. They do however work if clicking on the Unity launcher sidebar. This problem is fixed after a reboot.
- Using basic click touchpad gestures that are on the main section of the trackpad work normally (i.e. single finger tap to left click, two finger tap to right click, two finger drag to scroll).
- Other multitouch touchpad gestures do not work (e.g. 3-finger pinch or hold).

Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The issue appears to be fixed in mainline kernel 3.19.0-031900rc3-generic.

Under the updated kernel, behaviour is as follows:

- The entire mouse button area of the touchpad acts as a left mouse button
- Right mouse button clicking can be achieved through a two-finger tap
- Using the trackpad mouse buttons does not lock up the external mouse

It would be better if the right hand side of the touchpad mouse button area acted as a right-click action, but that seems like a separate issue.

I'm unable to confirm if the issue existed in an older version of Ubuntu - have only tried 14.10.

Thanks!

Wayne, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.16 to 3.19-rc3 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.
