Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

if I click the firefox icon twice, two windows open and are useable. If I click a third time, the two windows freeze, then turn black (by compiz), and I have to 'killall firefox-bin' to kill them.

I can confirm this, according to gnomefreak on on irc its either java6 or pango related.
Disabeling both javascript and java in the settings didn't work though, deleting my settings folder (~/mozilla/firefox) however did.

firefox version: 2.0.0.6+2-0ubuntu4

Ok ive thought about it and it might not be pango, can you please run the following command and try to reproduce the issue than close firefox.
strace -f firefox &> /tmp/strace.log
than attach /tmp/strace.log to the bug report. you may have to break the file down to smaller peices depending on your net connection.

Cameron can you please try running MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 firefox and see if you are able to reproduce it. if not please follow the instructions at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs
on trying with a new profile. I had Bart use new profile and problem no longer was reproducible at this time.

Cameron: also was this a clean install of gutsy or a upgrade from another version of ubuntu if upgrade from what version?

Cameron Braid (cameron-braid) wrote :

this was a clean install of gutsy from tribe 4, then fairly regular dist-upgrades to keep current.

I'll run through those tests in a few hours when I am able to reboot into my gutsy install.

I ran your strace command, then chose File -> New WIndow twice, waited for the window to turn black, then clicked the cross to close, then clicked Kill

MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 firefox doesn't make any difference

firefox -P, then creating a new profile solved the issue.

I also tried deleting ~/.mozilla and running firefox as normal, which also worked a treat.

Thanks for your help.

After accedentaly deleting my profile folder I wasn't able to reproduce. Now that I installed the addons again the bug reappeared.

The addons are:
Download statusbar
Google bookmarks button
Google toolbar
Link Alert
PDF Download
Signature
Stop-or-Reload Button
Tab Mix Plus

Bart Can you please remove all the above add ons and install them one by one to find out what one is breaking this.
Cameron, Can you please give a list of your addons/extentions/themes as well.

The only two add ons that I had installed were

* Firebug : http://www.getfirebug.com/
* Web Developer : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

I deleted my profile, and added both of these add ons, but I could not reproduce this bug.

OK, I finaly had the chance to test wich addon causes the freeze.

After adding all addons one by one and restarting, then testing by opening a third window.

The culprit is Google Toolbar version 3.0.20070525L. I've deleted my profile and installed only Google Toolbar just to be sure.

I will test more plugins now, maybe it can be traced to a certain XUL funtion or similar.

I disabled google toolbar and now no more freeze on #windows > 2.

Google tool bar and other google addons are causing all kinds of bugs, one of these days when im feeling a bit better i will get up with Alexander to see if this is something we can work around, but in all likelyhood the idea will be rejected as there are reasons we dont/cant support all adddons but i will see what we can do if anything

Bart, did earlier google toolbar versions work for you?

I never experienced anything like this bug. Unfortunately I could not find older versions of the google toolbar to test this with.

I can confirm that the google toolbar (version 3.0.20070525L) causes this issue in gutsy.
