1 January 2015 isync'd today's vivid 64 image
Booted the .iso image.
1. Wallpaper distored with vertical bars displayed which are not in the .iso
2. Selecting a new wallpaper does not take effect. Used to be, selecit it, and it came up.
Now, shows on the little drop down window but does not take effect on the main screen.

Doing daily updates on two different partitions no luck, bug still here.

Yesterday installed Nov 11 Vivid .iso in another partition. Wallpaper works fine. As of mid December to present, every boot wallpaper screwed up on Lenovo M58p

Reboot, all screwed up again.

What's different in the Set Wallpaper packages between Nov. 11 and mid December that screwed up the display? Any way to compare the two since they are in two different partitions?

Still very much there on boot of vivid and wily.

Do note, nautilus > pictures > select wallpaper once or twice or three times wallpaper displays correctly as it does on 14.10, 14.04, etc.

I made a command line version which works sometimes:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-url 'file:////home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'

What's different now in the set wallpaper script or exec or whatever devs call it? Vivid was fine in Nov., in Dec. Vivid changed something in the code. Anyone have records or any way to compare what changed in Vivid in Set Wallpaper?

Any way for me to put previous set wallpaper routines in Vivid and Wily?

Thanks...

Hello,

I have the same issue on lenovo M58P with intell graphics.
I think that the bug is related to gnome itself not only nautilus or unity. In ambiance theme most of the apps has white hashes at the right end of the toolbar which is black with this theme. I am using Variety for switching the wallpapers and it is very annoying to see hashes almost on every change of the wallpaper.
I hope that the bug will be fixed soon. The bug appeared also in a Cairo dock session which is actualy a gnome session with cairo dock as a panel.

Wily 15.10 is much better than 15.04. About half the time Wily comes up O.K., if not maybe one "set wallpape" fixes it.

There've been Wily xserver updates to xserver - one of the xserver updates made hashing wallpaper worse, next update now much better than 15.04.

Of course 14.10 and preceding levels of Ubuntu are fine.

I've seen mention of a BIOS update perhaps could affect this, perhaps not. If the update process screws up I've got a dead computer. Not willing to risk it at the moment.

I run standard Ubuntu and am not familiar with MATE. A couple years ago I may have tried it briefly in another Linux distro. I forget. Months ago I tried Lubuntu which as I remember didn't have the "hashing" problem. I think it uses LXDE. There's Kubuntu, Gnome, ... however many variations of Ubuntu. I've tried NEXT a couple of times but it didn't do much so I don't know if it has the problem. Now there's "Snappy" I' ve no clue what desktop it has or just command line?.

I use "out of the box" Ubuntu U+1 looking for bugs that would be applicable to the most (?) users. "Unity" has had lots of bugs....including this one..

How is MATE installed? Can I switch between Mate and Unity desktops or do I do an install?

How is MATE removed after testing it? example re-installing standard Ubuntu or just starting Unity?

Thanks.

BTW, my impression this bug is closely tied to xserver or to how Ubuntu Unity is using xserver. I have other pc's with different hardware and different video chips that don't exhibit this problem. This Lenovo M58p has an Intel 64 bit dual processor 3 GHz and is the fastest of my pc's. All is not great with 15.10 on the other pc's example an Intel 32 bit 3 GHz Compaq which has annoyingly slow video with 15.05 and 15.10 but 14.04 video is quite usable. I've forgotten which video benchmarks might be more believable to the Ubuntu Devs?

3.19.0-20-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 29 10:10:47 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Eight times out of nine booted with normal wallpaper. Hashed once which was readily fixed with command line:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:////home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'

Getting better, waiting for the next "dread update". This is U+1 after all. There's always LTS which runs fine, thank you.

With the latest kernel update 3.19.0-20 the hashing is worst then ever. I am using variety for wallpaper changing and now on every wallpaper change there is a hashing. I have to manualy change the wallpaper multiple times to get to normal view. And of course the issue is not only the wallpaper, but also other GTK elements which are hashed.

With 3.19.0-20-generic 64 bit I've had hashing once out of over 20 boots. All the rest fine.

Whatever reason, Wily running O.K. here. I took a .iso in case of a "Dread Update".

Try this to reproduce this issue with Ubuntu MATE so you can test it, but it is inconsistent.

All you have to do is click around in the wallpaper selector frame.
I tried different wallpapers, most of the stock Mate ones seem safe usually.
It really hates the default Ubuntu-Mate branded one, AND the one you select after that even if it is a safe one.
The second safe one selected seems to work.

The wallpaper that worked best for me was a Dalek wallpaper from the BBC I downloaded.

Bad news for the Doctor I’m afraid... Ubuntu-Mate favours Daleks

not as bad as 15.04 since 15.10 sometimes comes up with correct wallpaper display while 15.04 practically never does.

14.04-2 LTS runs just fine, thank you. Watching the updates which I do daily, xserver-xorg-intel updates seems to be the most likely to affect the display.

I change wallpaper back and forth between two copies of the same jpg, different names, like so:

#!/bin/bash
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:////home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'
exit 0

A bit of a pain but livable for a tester used to half baked releases with problems.

As of .iso daily live fresh install yesterday,

Boots to correct wallpaper.

Log in, screen flashes must be some kind of xserver reset, and then wallpaper hashed.

gsettings no longer works:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:////home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg'

Doesn't do anything. Used to reset wallpaper.

Have to go to System Settings > Appearance > Wallpapers > Picture Folder select the jpg and it works. May have to do it a couple times.

Why is wallpaper just fine on boot, then after log in gets screwed up?

Thanks for any ideas.
