Bug Description

Evince eats all CPU and all memory, while opening certain types of documents. I've noticed that this reproducible with PDF documents produced with LaTeX but not with other types of PDF documents.

The culprit seems to be a process called evince-thumbnailer. Even after closing the document that causes this, evince-thumbnailer continues to work in the background and keeps eating CPU and RAM memory. If this process is killed, it restarts itself and continues hogging CPU and memory.

I attach a file causing this and the stacktrace I produced. I'm reproducing this in two different systems of mine.

Workaround:
Open the dconf editor, navigate to "org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers" and set the key "disable" to "['application/x-dvi']".

Walter Garcia-Fontes, I've not been able to reproduce this in either Trusty with gnome-session-flasback (Compiz) or Vivid with Unity. It may be that it's fixed in Vivid, or it could be I'm not doing something that you are with the attached document that causes this.

Hence, could you please test for this in Vivid via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise if this is reproducible there?

This is also affecting me and appears to be from a pdf generated from LaTeX
