Bug Description
Mint 17.1 64bits (also experienced this bug previously on 17 and if I remember correctly on 16 as well).
Under heavy operations (and also things like basic USB copies that should'nt be heavy but seem to be), Mint can freeze, nothing is responding, no activity on screen, keyboard and mouse don't react. After the operation is finished, it goes back to normal, except the background image has switched to the default one for some strange reason.
Of course the main problem is that there are such freezes, but this is a side effect that should also be addressed.
Thanks,

Having the same problem with Mint 17.1 64bit. The freeze can be reproduced using autofs and a cifs mount on a samba share:
1)Connect to the remote Server via Nemo.
2) pull the wired connection.
3) About 10 to 20 seconds later Mint freezes. Mouse moves, keystrokes are possible.
Going into tty and log as root. Stopping autofs and umount -l the cifs share. When switching back into the gui session Cinnamon is up and well again.
No logs so far indicate a failure: dmesg, syslog, .xsessionerrors - none of the log anything during that time.
Hope it helps to narrow down the problem.
