Yes, I tried it again, it was during grub-install /dev/sda

Hmm. So what do I do now??

Which option did you chose from the installer menu? Side by side, format, or something else? The problem is that it is trying to install grub to /dev/sda, but it needs to be installed to /dev/mapper/isw_dfjdhaaece_HDD0. You can select where it should be installed if you choose the "something else" option.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it seems that there is a problem with your installation media (CD/DVD). You can verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you downloaded by following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM. You might also retry your installation with new media. In the event that is is not in fact an error with your installation media please set the bug's status back to New. Thanks and good luck!

Format (i.e. replace everything)

Thanks, I will try that.

If I try that it says "No root file system is defined", but I really have
no idea what I should do to correct that...

You have to specify a filesystem to be mounted as the root directory ( / ).

Well, it really isn't clear from the interface of this program how you do
that. It talks of a partitioning menu, which doesn't exist. It seems to me
that if the automatic installation doesn't work, the poor user is dumped
in a no-man's land of non-understandable possibilities.

It isn't really that complicated. There is a plus button to add
partitions, and you click on each listed partition and can set where
it should be mounted, what filesystem type it should have, and choose
to format it or not ( if it already has that type ). The normal setup
is to have one partition of type swap, and one partition of type ext4,
mounted as the root directory ( / ). Some people like to have a
smaller root partition and most of the space separate and mounted in
/home.

Sorry, I didn't notice before that you have an EFI system, so the grub location doesn't matter. The error you get is due to a known bug in the installer, but if you reboot, it should work fine.
