xorg crashes with no likely cause after automatic nvidia 331.113update 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build

automatic update to nvidia driver (from 331.xx-update driver version available under hardware prorietary drivers menu to further 331.113update) causes frequent xorg crashes with no apparent cause, unrelated to any particular process.
Also gdm fails to load on boot-up\reboot frequently.
