AFAIK this was caused by the proprietary Cisco AnyConnect VPN client I had installed. I unstinatlled it (sudo /opt/cisco/ vpn/bin/ vpn_uninstall. sh), updraded the packages without a hitch and reinstalled the VPN client. It seems to have worked perfectly.
