AFAIK this was caused by the proprietary Cisco AnyConnect VPN client I had installed. I unstinatlled it (sudo /opt/cisco/vpn/bin/vpn_uninstall.sh), updraded the packages without a hitch and reinstalled the VPN client. It seems to have worked perfectly.
