Bug Description

Just installed Freya beta 1 on my laptop and dist-upgraded it, so system up to date.

When browsing the network with Files, I can see the other machine on my local network (my desktop PC using Xubuntu) but entering it, I can't see any of its shared folders. If I select "connect to server" then connect with Samba (as guest or user), I can see the shared folders but I can't see any files when entering them.
Connecting through SSH works fine. Browsing Samba shares from other distros on the same laptop (previously used Xubuntu and Linux Mint on it) worked fine.

Can you see and browse the shares successfully using Nautilus or Thunar on Freya? If not, try inserting the line:

name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins

into the [global] section of /etc/samba/samb.conf. Does this fix it?

There is a branch in preparation that will fix a number of (but not all) issues with network browsing but it will not fix problems with network discovery as this is not performed by Files.

I've reinstalled Freya in a virtual machine so that I wouldn't mess with my laptop for these tests. I can confirm that the behaviour after installation is the same as on my laptop.

With Nautilus and Thunar, network browsing works fine. As a sidenote, after launching Thunar, my network folder was still mounted from Nautilus and functional (I unmounted it and browsed the network again to confirm that it worked fine in Thunar too). When going to "All network" and clicking on a machine in Pantheon Files, it doesn't mount a network folder. Not sure that it's relevant to the issue.

Adding the name resolve order option to smb.conf didn't change anything for Pantheon Files (I rebooted the system after the change to be sure Samba was restarted).

I have now confirmed this using a new install of Freya beta1, updated. I can also confirm that this bug will be fixed by the linked branch.

Thanks for the report.

@Daniel, @Jeremy,

Sorry for the ignorance but, Have you checked PerfectCarl's merge request? He says it solves several samba errors.
