Bug Description

Unlike web browsers where tabs play an important role, I personally feel that tabs in a terminal app especially on a small screen device like a N4 is not the most used feature. Ofcourse on the desktop, the tabs is a life saver. As such it would be better if the tabs button is shown only when the following conditions are met,

1. More than 1 tab is being used by the user (on the phone)
2. May be add a settings option to enable/disable the tabs feature (by showing/hiding the tabs button)

I partially agree with you, tabs are not really mandatory, but I think they might be useful in some cases. The problem with condition 1 is that if we hide the tab button the user won't be able to create a new tab. A checkbox in setting might be a reasonable solution.

What about a completely different approach? I was thinking: what if we make the two button almost transparent (say 0.2, 0.3 opacity) and when the user touches the screen set the opacity to the value we have now. That way the buttons will be invisible for every practical purposes at no costs in terms of features.

I kind of agree with Nik's point in bug #1400329. I think both the tabs and settings actions could be moved into the bottom-left menu--perhaps at the top of the list of options.

importance: Undecided → Wishlist
