Bug Description

The default install of 14.04 loads the mei module for this motherboard, and it occasionally causes boot to hang with a message:

    mei: init hw failure.

Right after the btrfs scan. This has been experienced elsewhere it seems:

   http://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/Resolve_mei:_Init_hw_failure_or_mei:_initialization_failed

For background, this motherboard has a Xeon E3-1270. I don't think the C226 even has MEI/vPro on it, so we should probably just blacklist for the moment.

Actually, the block diagram does suggest it has at least a link to MEI firmware: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/server-chipsets/c222-c224-c226-chipset-diagram.html

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1397414

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I can't use apport-collect from the terminal of that machine (lynx fails the launchpad login dance). I'm attaching the saved .crash file I got by running "apport-cli linux --save ~/foo.crash".

Christian Reis, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I haven't been able to reproduce the hang on the 3.18.1 kernel I am using, but I can't easily reboot the machine many times as it's a production server. I need to get a spare board to really test.
