Bug Description

My laptop touchpad only works as left/right button and moving around. No other features (scrolling, ..) are working. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.5 and xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2. In System Settings > Mouse and Touchpad there is no Touchpad tab.

cat /proc/bus/input/devices:

Miguel Ribeiro, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I've installed 3.18-rc6 and the touchpad is still not detected (in the xinput).

Would it be helpful for me to do anything else?

Thanks a lot,

Miguel Ribeiro, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-input) by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Asus X450JN has the same touchpad (pnp id FLT0102) as X553MA so the steps mentioned here might
make it work:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392949

I've built couple kernels with those patches applied:

Hi,

Janne: Thanks a lot, those patches worked for me in most of the features.

Christopher: Do you think I should processed reporting to linux-input? Or as is a known issue that people have already worked on, shouldn't?

Thank you guys,

Miguel Ribeiro, if you have tested this issue in the latest mainline kernel (now 3.18-rc7) and it doesn't work, it's considered an upstream issue eligible for reporting as previously advised.
