indicator applet does not work on MATE

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10. Using the MATE 1.8 from the official repo.

The applet takes up a small space on the panel and is right-clickable.
Occasionally it 'blinks' on, for a split second - taking up the correct amount of space on the panel.

This is version:
0.5-0~134~37~25~ubuntu14.10.1

same on LM 18.3 Cinnamon, just a square with a red circle/slash in the middle, no icons
