Bug Description

I have a Lenovo G505s laptop running dual boot Ubuntu 14.10/Windoes 8.1.

If I boot the laptop into Ubuntu and plug the drive into a USB3 port, the device shows up in lsusb but is not shown in Dolphin.

If I boot the laptop into Ubuntu and plug the drive into a USB2 port, the device shows up in lsusb and is shown in Dolphin.

If I boot the laptop into Windows, then Restart and boot into Ubuntu (i.e. without fully powering down the Laptop) the external drive appears in Dolphin when plugged into a USB3 port.

Whenever the drive appears in Dolphin I can read from and write to it.

Thank you for that. I have updated the BIOS on the laptop and eventually managed to get back into Ubuntu (the update apparently moved the Windows Boot Manager (?) to the top of the boot priority list so I could only boot into Windows...).

I still can't access the external WD drive on teh USB port on the laptop.

The output from the command you asked me to run is as folows:

AndrewS, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing in your release) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

OK, I have tried to install the package at the following link:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14.4-utopic/linux-headers-3.14.4-031404-generic_3.14.4-031404.201405130853_amd64.deb

The file downloads but I get an error message saying that "Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-headers-3.14.4-031404"

Maybe I misuderstood what was required?

Since my last post I actually read the instructions (!) - sorry, should have done that first.

I installed the linux-image file, but unfortunately I still cannot see the WD drive in Dolphin.

I hope I have added the tags correctly.

As well, could you please provide the full model of your external hard drive as noted on the drive itself?

When I run that command, I get the message "No such file or directory". However, as the drive isn't mounted when plugged in to the USB3 port, I re-ran the command when I plugged it in to a USB2 port. This is the output:

AndrewS, could you please update the firmware of the drive to 3.2.5.1 as per http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=223&lang=en and advise if this changes anything?

If it doesn't, could you please post the results of the following while the drive is plugged in:
sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb

OK, I downloaded and ran the WD Firmware Updater for Windows. It said the firmware on the drive was up to date, but I carried on anyway.

The drive still doesn't appear in Dolphin when plugged in to the USB3 port.

The output from the hdparm command (drive plugged in to a USB2 port, using kernel 3.18 rc4) is as follows:

sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb
