Further to this, the root cause appears to be the Cisco anyconnect client installation. See http:// forums. debian. net/viewtopic. php?f=30& t=53192
Manually getting rid of the files referred to in that post solve the "hung state" problem for me, and the upgrade now appears to be proceeding correctly.
