Bug Description

My touchpad does not appear in the list when i run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices". This is a brand new installation on this notebook, Ubuntu has never been installed or operated before.

An external USB mouse works when it is connected (and is visible with the above terminal command). The touchpad remains dead.

The touchpad works in windows 7 (dual boot system).

Using the instructions at "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection", I have attached the ~/dmesg, ~/devices and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Adam Francis, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc2

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I changed to the upstream kernel but there was no change in the noted behavior.

I am not sure if this is relevant but I changed from Ubuntu Desktop to XBMCbuntu since reporting this issue. The issue is still exactly the same on XBMCbuntu, no touchpad response and no touchpad listed in the 'cat /proc/bus/input/devices'. The upstream kernel change still produced the bug.

Adam Francis, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-input) by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

and then give output

Okay, booted with i8042.noloop=1 i8042.nomux=1 kernel parameters. Ran a terminal and typed "dmesg | grep pnp". This is the output:

I forgot to mention that this was done on the upstream kernel.

Also, the touchpad works when I boot with these commands.

@Adam

This looks like an unknown device for the kernel. There is nothing to do, but to make an upstream report and hope, that someone will find a way.
