Bug Description

Variants tested on which error found -
* Ubuntu-14.10-Desktop Final Release
* Ubuntu-Gnome-14.10-Desktop Final release

When booting the ISO (using grubentry method), the screen freezes and becomes unresponsive after 3 secs of showing up the desktop GUI screen. Not able to continue beyond that or even to the installation step. Do not face this issue with Beta 1 or Beta 2. The md5sum for iso file is OK. Problem is repeatable everytime.

I am attaching my laptop profile.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tried mainline kernel v3.18-rc2 as suggested. It would not boot properly and took me to the intramfs screen (see attachment). Also while starting with that kernel the screen was stretched horizontally.

I have also updated BIOS to A12, the problem still persists with that BIOS version.

Status for various kernel version sis as follows :

  3.16.0-17 (Utopic-Beta2) - **WORKS**
  3.16.0-23 - Does not Work
  3.17.1 - Does not Work
  3.18.0-rc2 - Does not boot properly

The 3.18RC2 kernel doesn't work for many people. Suggest you try 3.18RC1.

Harjeet Singh, anything change testing 3.18-rc1?

As well, did you test v3.18-rc2-vivid, v3.18-rc2-utopic, or both?

I tested against v3.18-rc2-utopic as am trying Utopic install.

I have to test out 3.18-rc1 . Unfortunately since i test it out on what is my main dev laptop as do not have another machine to test on, it takes sometime in between. Will let you know soon.

Tested against v3.18-rc1-utopic. Does not work still (i.e. desktop freezes on login).
However does not give error like for 3.18-rc2.

Harjeet Singh, the next step is to fully commit bisect the kernel in order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?
