Bug Description

Since the upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10 the Synaptic touchpad is not detected entirely. The secondary key (right mouse button) does not work with kernel 3.16.0-23-generic. Falling back under Ubuntu 14.10 to the kernel 3.13.0-37-generic the Synaptic touchpad is detected fully and right mouse button works again.

WORKAROUND: Set in BIOS Touchpad from Advanced, to Basic.

holger_p., thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

So I started again to bisect again and now I am bisecting between v3.14 (good) and v3.15-rc1 (bad). Hope that this will give a better result and I do not have to skip too many commits.

I pulled today's commits from git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git which build as kernel 3.18.0 showing still the same issue.

Additionaly I took the opportunity to upgrade my ACER B115's BIOS from V1.22 to V1.26. Luckily I had to reset my personal settings back and with this I also took a deeper look into the BIOS settings. There I discovered a setting under MAIN->TOUCHPAD=ADVANCED. This seems to be the "default" with an additional note like: ...take care the I2C driver is loaded first if using advanced setting...
I decided to set this to BASIC instead and since then the Synaptic touchpad is recognised UNDER 14.10 as with previous Ubuntu 14.04.

I assume the I2C_HID recognition does not yet work as supposed to since the dmesg with TOUCHPAD=ADVANCE under 3.16 showed

i2c_hid i2c-SYN1B7D:01: failed to retrieve report from device.

which it does not under the BIOS setting MAIN->TOUCHPAD=BASIC <strange>.

Migrated to 3.19 following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack instructions.

Problem continues.
