Bug Description

After upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10 my screen goes black at random times.
The sound keeps playing so I know it's still running.
The only way I can get the screen back is by pressing the power button, which will show the shutdown selection window and unblackens the screen.
Update: it probably has something to do with the graphics drivers because my screen also flashes black during gaming
My laptop is a Lenovo ideapad z580
Intel Core i7-3520M
integrated graphics
6 gb ram
Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing a same/similar issue on a Dell XPS13 Developer Edition 9333 and have seen it with linux-image-3.16.3-031603-generic (mainline) linux-image-3.16.0-24-generic and linux-image-extra-3.16.0-23-generic. I have attempted to test it with linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc2-generic but it will not boot (/dev/disk/by-uuid does not exist, drops to busybox).

Sometimes I am able to switch to the VT with ctrl-alt-F1 and switch back with ctrl-alt-F7, however once this has occurred it happens very frequently until I reboot.

I have included a portion of my syslog which may possibly be related to the issue.
