Cannot set time automatically from the Internet in date/time settings

Bug Description
In my upgraded Ubuntu 14.10, the option to set time automatically from the Internet in date/time settings is greyed out (see attached image).
In a fresh installation on a VM, the option is *not* greyed out.
I am running systemd in the upgraded version, if that makes a difference.
