libgl1-mesa-dri in Ubuntu 14.04 cannot provide 3D acceleration in VirtualBox

Bug Description
I tried both release and proposed versions of libgl1-mesa-dri (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1 and 10.1.3-0ubuntu0.2). They both produce the same errors as shown below:

The workaround, as referenced in the following link, is to downgrade libgl1-mesa-dri. I tried downgrading to 10.1.0-4ubuntu5 but it also didn't work.

First reported 6 months ago. Looks like people have yet to figure out whether the root cause is in mesa or in VirtualBox.
