What shows up when you right-click the switcher on the panel?

normal context menu, preferences, help etc. Click on preferences I just get option to show only current workspace and show workspaces on (n) rows. No option to changes number of workspaces.

I've just enabled the restricted drivers for my ATI card, rebooted and now the workspace switcher behaves normally, giving the option to change the number of workspaces. Now Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 crashes when I try to open an email, but not when opening a newsgroup post or composing an email. I'll try removing and re-installing to see if that fixes it.

Removal and re-installation fixed Thunderbird. The reason I enabled the restricted drivers was because I was getting flickering and flashes of the wallpaper showing through windows on the right side of the screen. That has stopped now. Looks like the bug has to do with the open source ATI drivers conflicting with the workspace switcher? How it caused Thunderbird to crash I have no idea, but it looks like I'm fixed for the moment.

With the ATI restricted drivers, compiz doesn't work, so installing the restricted ATI driver probably fixed your problem by disabling desktop effects. With desktop effects disabled, the workspace preferences have the option of changing the number of workspaces, as discussed in bug #129152

I have the same problem with Nvidia restricted drivers as above. Running latest and greatest (Gutsy) updated to day. Disabling the effects gives me four desktops.

I have an up-to-date gutsy, and the problem stays. I use the intel driver, and the visual desktop effects. If I disabled those, I can chose the number of workspace freely :)
