Bug Description

This started after I added a 2nd user w/o password; I'm not sure if this is related.
After suspend, the screen goes black. I am the 1st user; clicking the up-key and entering my password blindly normally gets me back.
I have a new ASUS monitor connected via HDMI cable.

Cristian Heller, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I installed the newest kernel as instructed. 'uname -a' now gives:
Linux chris-Studio-540 3.17.0-031700-generic #201410051635 SMP Sun Oct 5 20:36:18 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But the error still happens. I also repeatedly got back in but then clicking onto the Ubuntu icons on the left did not do anything, <ctrl><alt><delete> did not do anything, and I pushed the power-button long for a restart.

When the 'screen goes blank' I first get a "HDMI no signal" and then the blue light turns to orange (standby). I once heard the 'login-sound' (drums) and I again clicked the up-key and entered my password blind.

Please let me know what I can test or send.

Thanks, Chris

This bug hit me first with current Ubuntu 14.04, and still happens with 3.17.0.
I thought I did what you wanted me to do.

Christian Heller, to clarify, have you tested a release prior to 14.04 and was able to reproduce this problem.
