Gray screen between unity greeter login and desktop

I'm looking for a 'smooth' transition between unity greeter and my desktop screen. Instead, I get this ugly gray screen. The 'bug' is duplicated between two different computers (both home & work). Hope you can help, thank you in advance.

This has been fixed in Xubuntu 14.04 (lightdm-gtk-greeter + xfwm4 with compositing enabled).

Hi Thaddaus,

I've been in communication with the Xfce Forums about this. The feeling
there is that I've switched to the Unity Greeter, which is causing the
'bug'. I realize the issue had been addressed and corrected between the
gtk-greeter and xfwm4, but this is not my case.

I look forward to your advice.
