Bug Description

Hello,

  I installed Trusty on a Dell Inspiron 5537 laptop, yet it fails to boot beyond the plymouth animation.

So I booted in recovery mode, and done the following:
* Enabled network
* Dropped to root shell, and started gdm from there.
* Return back to recovery menu, and select to resume normal boot (without closing gdm).

At this point, the console screen becomes blank (except for a blinking cursor), and I see no progress at all. So I return to gdm, login from there, and checked dmesg, and I find what seems to be a kernel oops:

I forgot to mention that pressing CTRL+ALT+F[1-6] wouldn't work !

I should have explained the previous comment further:

  Before resuming normal boot, I am able to switch from gdm to tty[1-6] by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1.
Yet after I select to resume normal boot, if I then switch to gdm, I can no longer switch back to tty[1-6]

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Setting to invalid. Turned out a hardware problem in one of the installed RAM modules.

Sorry for the noise...
