I just got this exact error after installing 3.16.0-18-generic kernel and rebooting.
This is on Utopic Unicorn 14.10 Mate Remix.

Recieved this error when running apt-get dist-upgrade in mate-terminal on a fresh 14.10 Ubuntu Mate Beta2 install. I had Nvidia 331 driver installed from the additional drivers application.
