This does not appear to be a bug in mailx. I was just able to install it on Gutsy with no issue. The key phrase in the error message is "Read-only file system". For some reason dpkg thought the file system was read only at that point. Concentrate on figuring out why that was the case.

Note for other triagers, feel free to jump in, I'm unlikely to be able to contribute further to this bug report.

Oops, my bad. Indeed I (accidentally) had left the root filesystem mounted readonly, after investigating another (unrelated) problem.

When I next logged in again, the apport applet popped up, to let me file this bug, but unfortunately, there was no easy way to see the contents of the report (DpkgTerminalLog.gz), which would have shown me that this report was entirely silly... Sorry for wasting your time like this.
