Bug Description

My system has a NVidia Geforce 6600GT with 128 megs of memory. After a recent update within the last few days, my nvidia card is not being used to it's full potential anymore.

My linux restricted drivers manager used to say NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (enabled/in use) and another NVIDIA driver (not sure which one), also enabled and in/use. Ever since the update some things are not working. I play Age of Empires 3 using Wine. Now that program will not run. I googled the error message I got and it says that the video driver in use has to be updated.

I then went to Applications/System Tools/SYSinfo and looked a NVIDIA / NVidia Display Settings. I get an error message that says "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server". My xorg.conf file says "nvidia" for the driver.

I've also noticed that an app has appeared under System/Administration called Screens and Graphics. It is incorrectly identifying my card as a Geforce 6800 generic, even though my xorg.xonf says my card is a nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT].

I am using nvidia-glx-new, because nvidia-glx causes X not to start, nvidia-glx-legacy causes X not to start. That is 100.14.11 driver works, but is very slow. 9639 does not work and neither does 7185.

Another thing I have noticed is that my LDM now only lists one NVIDIA driver (enabled / in use). The other one is gone. My screensavers do not work, I only get a blank screen now, like Power Management is being used even though I have them set for Never blank screen. I know some nvidia card is being used because I can use Desktop effects.

The generic nv driver will not work. I've tried that but it goes in and says out of sync on my monitor.

I would like to get something working alot better than this. I believe it happened wither 9/1 or 9/2.

Attached is a history of changes on thise dates

Does disabling desktop-effects make any difference?

No. It wasn't working before. I just turned on Desktop Effects to test out the driver. I would have thought that desktop effects would need a gl driver. It's almost like I have a gl driver (hence the name nvidia-glx-new) but I really have a normal nv driver in disguise.

Here is the output of .xsession-errors. There may be something in here that will give you a clue

I came across this bug #136598, and followed this:

As someone stated in the forums ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=540386 ), deleting this file and restarting will do the trick. At least for some of us.

sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/00xserver-xgl_start-server

So I removed that file to another location, and it works now. Everything works.
