Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've got a bit more info.

As you can also see in the 'mainline kernel install log' attachment, since this same update, I also have a graphics driver problem: no more opengl/hardware accelleration, with all of the 3 driver options (fglrx, fglrx-updates, xorg). Before I used fglrx-updates because this seemed to work the best of the 3 (not good, but better than the rest).

After install of the mainline kernel, I tried switching to the xorg option: still no opengl, but at least suspend/resume seems to work now! When I resume the computer, I get a flash of random multicolored dots and stripes, but I don't have to ctrl-alt-del anymore.

One more very weird thing: when I use the keyboard to increase or decrease screen brightness, the laptop goes to sleep. This didn't happen before.

I checked "systemsettings/shortcuts and gestures" but this seems ok: "decrease sceen brightness -> monitor brightness down"
