You'd need to run dh_desktop in debian/rules.

Also: do you think you can forward the patch upstream or to Debian?

I thought that dh_desktop was to be called only if .desktop file contains MIME reference (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debhelper/+bug/119241).

Probably not required, right - I'd still encourage to run it, but that's your decision. :)

Also: are you going to submit the patch upstream? That way we can get translations for it easier and don't have to carry it as a diff.

Fixed in Hardy and Intrepid a while ago (the package isn't in Jaunty anymore) . Installed it on Intrepid amd64 (latest release with the program) and it shows up in Applications/Graphics.
