danieru, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

same problems with latest upstream kernel, 3.17-rc6.

While running acpi_listen, I can see that the following fn hotkeys show no response:

fn+F2 wifi
fn+F5 decrease brightness
fn+F6 increase brightness
fn+F8 screen output

Can anyone provide some simple steps on how to identify the information I need to map these properly? I've poked around with google, and found for example a wiki page on evtest here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection/evtest

I installed and ran evtest, but the wiki entry makes no mention of *which* log file to upload, and how the information in said log file is useful.

danieru, as per http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X551MA/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (513). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,
Don't have access to the computer in question just now, but I could try to get to it soon. It would be great to know if there's a chance that this issue will be fixed before I take more time on it however.
