Bug Description

Laptop model: Asus K750 series.
Exact model number: K750LN-T4155
The symptom started: Since first run

I just bought a new laptop( the full model # on the box is K750LN-T4155 if that matters ) and since booting into Ubuntu through the Live USB the touchpad wasn't working at all. I've installed Ubuntu anyway(since I usually have an external mouse) and looked for any updates that would make it work, but found none.

I don't know who's the manufacturer of the touchpad, since it's not specified anywhere - neither online(a search yields very little results for that particular model), in any of the documents/manuals I got about it and since it's not recognized by the OS, I have nowhere else to look.

Due to another issue with the same laptop(the fn keys not working), I tried running one of the latest versions of the Linux kernel, namely: 3.16.3-031603.201409171435_amd64
That didn't fix either of my issues, so I know that it hasn't been resolved upstream.

I'm going to consequentially attach the files from the following commands:

dmesg
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

As well as my Xorg log:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Nikola Nikolov, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi, sorry for the delay. I'm running the 3.17-rc5 kernel, but the touchpad is still not working(it's still not listed under /proc/bus/input/devices either).

Let me know if you need any more details or any further assistance from me - I'll try to respond as quickly as I can.

Christopher M. Penalver, can you possibly take a look at the email that I got ready for the mail list and let me know if that seems complete.

The email can be found here - http://pastebin.com/YmxjZQHy . The subject of the email is: "PROBLEM: [Asus X750LN] Touchpad not recognized" and it's going to be addressed to the linux-input mail list(that seemed like the most appropriate place).

I believe I followed the steps 1:1, but the wiki page stresses a lot on making sure that the bug report is complete and not missing anything.

Thank you for your assistance.

Nikola Nikolov, I've modified 7.7, but other than that, looks good. One would want to e-mail this to the linux-input mailing list.

I found a workaround which should make the touchpad work in ps/2 mouse emulation mode.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1110011

You need to add a Kernel Boot Parameter to set the flag i8042.nomux=1 psmouse.proto=bare
which will enable PS/2 Mouse Emulation mode on your touchpad.

Edit your default grub file.

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Find the line that mentions GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and add the flag:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.noloop=1 psmouse.proto=bare"

Then save the file and run a grub update.

sudo grub-update

Then restart the system .
