[steps to reproduce]
Boot and wait for login screen. Right after entering password, the desktop environment (lightdm) crashes and a popup is shown: "ksmserver could not start: check your installation".
The only way left to interact with the system is via CLI by switching to a virtual console [Ctrl-Alt-FN]

I tried to restore the desktop environment by typing from a virtual console:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331 nvidia-prime
Since then, I'm able to login into lightdm only by booting in failsafe mode at grub menu, but one odd thing is the lame nvidia-settings window shown in the attached picture. Also, the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is now missing.
I also tried to select the intel card with the command:
sudo prime-select intel
but then I get plenty of errors in kernel.log:
