Bug Description

When opened, simple scan does not automatically detect my scanner address.

If I open simple-scan with "simple-scan hpaio:/net/Officejet_6700?ip=192.168.1.170", it finds the scanner and everything works.

Even though the simple-scan preferences menu Document/Preferences/Scan Source shows the correct scanner address prior to closing simple-scan and dconf-editor shows org.gnome.simple-scan.selected-device to have the correct scanner address after simple-scan is closed, the next time I open simple-scan, it cannot find the scanner and Document/Preferences/Scan Source is blank.

Can you attach ~/.cache/simple-scan/simple-scan.log after this occurs. Or you can run simple-scan --debug.

The log shows that SANE can't autodetect this scanner. Do you think it should be (i.e. is SANE defective in this case?)

If this is a class of scanner that can't be autodetected we should probably add some UI for manually adding scanners.

I'd say there's two parts to this:

1. If I enter the scanner address manually (and it is reflected correctly in dconf), then simple-scan should remember it the next time.

2. Since cups autodetected the multi-function printer/scanner/fax, then sane/simple-scan should autodetect it or, failing that, take the address from cups.

OK, then you should open a bug against the HP drivers for the second part - simple-scan runs the SANE autodetect function but it doesn't pick it up.

I'm not sure if command line scanners should be remembered but we should make it possible to manually add in scanners for this sort of case that are remembered.

Do mean file a bug against hplip or sane?

hplip as they provide the SANE drivers.
